spotlight - Reality of Roe
In 2019, NARAL doubled down on state legislative campaigning with Reality of Roe a national campaign to educate people about what access to abortion truly looks like in their state and across the country—and what they can do about it. In a year when anti-choice politicians launched attacks on reproductive freedom in unprecedented ways—criminalizing abortion and punishing women—NARAL members led the way, fighting to protect and expand abortion access and demonstrating that we are the majority: the 77% who support the fundamental right to reproductive freedom.
Across the country NARAL members: took 50,000 online actions, made 14,000 calls, sent 2,000 postcards, and hosted 215 events in their communities. At the end of the campaign, eight states had passed priority legislation: NY, NV, WA, VT, IL, ME, RI, and CA—with five states passing bills to safeguard the legal right to abortion, and five states expanding access.
STATE BAN ANIMATION TIMELINE
I made this animation to show the increase in extreme bans at the state level after Kavanaugh joined the Supreme Court which led to a conservative majority. The states enacted the bans to make a pathway to chip away at abortion access and putting Roe at risk. This animation was used on digital platforms - website, sms, social media, and email.
STATE FACTSHEETS
I created factsheets for all 50 states and Washington, DC using the data merge function in InDesign. Working with the government relations and political team, we determined what data was available in a consistent format and I developed four different templates based on the status of reproductive freedom in each state.
